Building small dams

THIS refers to media reports (May 19) that shortfall of electricity has risen to 4,700 MW and which would further rise with increase in temperature.

The recent MoU between the PEC and the HEC must also include plans to carry out the feasibility of ROR dams in all four provinces, as well as in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

I am confident there are many natural sites and there are also ways to build ROR dams in the flow of the river by creating falls ranging from 150 to 600 feet by installing pen-stock in one of the tributaries of the river flow.

I suggest that this is economical compared to constructing large dams. A brief detail is to create a head of 150 to 600 feet so that the turbine installed at downstream of the river can propel the vertical turbine, which is further coupled with an alternator to generate electricity.

I also request the minister of planning and development and reforms to undertake this project under CDWP. In this way the energy crisis can be overcome, instead of banking on large dams with much funds and time.
