Whither democracy?

WHY is it that we have failed to inculcate the essence of democracy among our ranks even after 67 years of existence? Are the values of democracy too demanding for our people? Or are we as a nation just not suited to democracy?

Hailed as the best form of government for ‘any’ state, democracy in Pakistan is in a sorry state. The problems of the people of Pakistan cannot wait for long.

Turkey can be quoted as an example where prudent economic and educational policies by Tayyib Erdogan saw Turkey’s growth rate reach more than 11pc in less than seven years.

The point being that in the 21st century if democracy is going to bring a change in the destiny of a country, it has to show some potential within a decade.

In conclusion, democracy is as strong as the people of the country. Where Pakistan stands now, the people are at their weakest.
