Water crisis

APROPOS Faiza Riaz’s letter (May 20), I would like to add that water is scarce, but as compared to natural gas its scarcity is not grave. The management and distribution of gas is more efficient, transparent, organised and responsive whereas the authorities responsible for water distribution in Karachi are non-serious and totally oblivious of the mounting crisis in near future.

Owing to rapid urbanisation, Karachi has outgrown its limits without satisfactory improvement in urban services and infrastructure. It seems that the present and past governments have badly failed to plan and manage the demographic transition in an efficient and sustainable manner.

Media reports have exposed the apathy of the government in resolving the water crisis. The poor citizens are suffering, both humanely and economically, at the hands of hydrant and tanker mafia.

It’s time the government woke up to plan and provide more water to the city with an efficient, just and equitable distribution.
