PTI woman candidate disqualified for cantt board seat

PESHAWAR: An appellate judge on Thursday disqualified a PTI candidate for the seat reserved for woman in the Peshawar Cantonment Board elections.

Additional district and sessions judge, Nusrat Yasmeen, who is the appellate judge for the cantonment board elections in Peshawar, accepted an appeal of a PPP candidate, Farah Waseem, against the acceptance of the nomination papers of rival candidate, Farhat Zulfiqar, on the ground that she filied her papers after the time specified for it.

Qazi Jawad Ahsanullah, lawyer for the appellant, said the relevant authority had announced the filling of reserved seats for women and minorities announcing that nomination papers could be filed on May 18 until 4pm.

He, however, said until the closing time, only the appellant filed nomination paper in the Peshawar Cantonment Board with the returning officer. The lawyer said candidate Farhat Zulfiqar filed her nomination papers the same day after closing time at around 5:30pm.

He added that despite his client objection, the returning officer accepted rival candidate’s papers in violation of rules.

According to the election schedule, the names of contesting candidates will be notified on May 23, whereas polling will take place on May 29. Following the rejection of nomination papers Ms Farhat Zulfiqar, only the appellant, Farah Waseem, has been left in the field.

STRIKE CALL: Lawyers will boycott local courts for two days to protest the torturing of a colleague at a police station.

Peshawar High Court Bar Association president Fida Gul and Peshawar District Bar Association president Ismail Khalil announced that lawyers would boycott the proceedings of courts on Friday and Saturday and finalise future course of action on Saturday.

They alleged that lawyer Faqirullah Awan had gone to Paharipura police station on Thursday for personal work but the policemen on duty first misbehaved with him and then tortured him.
