LAHORE: The two-day 7th Phonetic Workshop, organised by the Dawn Media Group in collaboration with the Oxford University Press, concluded here on Thursday.

Part of ‘Dawn in Education Programme,’ the workshop provided an opportunity to some 242 teachers from 100 public- and private-sector schools across Punjab to understand various techniques and enable them to give theoretical explanation for pronouncing a word in a certain manner so that they could explain it to the pupils.

Azka Khan, who holds master’s degree in Linguistics from NUML University, conducted the workshop at the OUP’s auditorium in Gulberg. During the workshop, Ms Khan explained to the audience how the pronunciation of the children could be improved and explained the phonetic symbols in an easy way.

Hailing from educational institutions of Rahim Yar Khan, Jallalpur Jattan, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Multan, Sahiwal, Liaquatpur, Fazilpur, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Sargodha, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Muridke, Mandi Bahauddin, Jhang, Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahawalpur, the teachers in group of 60 took part in different activities and discussed their experiences regarding English language teaching in four sessions.

The participants were of the view that the workshop was very informative and the Dawn Media Group should continue to hold such workshops to provide an opportunity to the teachers to learn and understand the new techniques in language teaching.

Khurram from LGS Paragon Campus said the workshop was informative and participatory that provided him an opportunity to learn new techniques in phonetic and how to teach it to the students.

A group of participants from Jadeed Dastgir Ideal School, Gujranwala, said the teachers were anxiously waiting for the Spelling Bee Competition and they would try to make it possible for the children of their schools to win the contest.

The Dawn Media Group annually holds these workshops before the event of Spelling Bee in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. The Spelling Bee aims at expanding children’s horizons beyond the classroom and enhancing their scope of learning. The contest is designed to help students improve their spellings, increase their vocabulary, learn new concepts and develop the correct usage of the English language.
