Five stand-out red carpet trends at Cannes

This year's Cannes Film Festival didn't disappoint, style-wise. In fact, it gave that other seminal fashion event — the Met Gala — a run for its money.

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most hotly anticipated events in cinema, featuring countless film premieres, A-list parties and more.

Here's a round up of the hottest style trends at Cannes, as seen on the red carpet and more:

1. Trend: Bright white

White was a winning colour on the red carpet — all the better to show off that sun-kissed tan!

Who wore it best? Actress Emma Stone in Christian Dior Haute Couture, model Bar Refaeli in a draped column by Roland Mouret, Doutzen Kroes in Atelier Versace.

2. Trend: Cut-outs

Moving beyond baring just a midriff, red carpet looks played peek-a-boo with a vengeance.

Who wore it best? Liya Kebede in Proenza Schouler, Karlie Kloss in Atelier Versace and Michelle Rodriguez.

3. Trend: Sheer

Sheer seems to be the go-to style if you want to turn heads. as proven by Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez at the Met Gala. However, going sheer is risky — one wrong step and you're suddenly boudoir-ready rather than bold. A few stars managed to navigate this well at Cannes, showing us how sheer should be done.

Who wore it best? Emma Stone in Oscar de la Renta, Michelle Rodriguez in Zuhair Murad.

4. Trend: Red

After all that white you need a bit of red to add to that summer heat.

Who wore it best? Natalie Portman and Katrina Kaif in Elie Saab.

5. Trend: Plunging necklines

You can't go wrong with a classic V and these stars show you how it's done.

Who wore it best? Lupita Nyong'o in Gucci, Julianne Moore in Armani Prive and Miranda Kerr in Emanuel Ungaro.
