KU employees interviewed for clues to teacher’s murder

KARACHI: A special investigation team of police on Thursday visited Karachi University to interview staff to get clues to the killers of Dr Waheed-ur-Rehman and their motive for the murder.

The team, led by Central SSP Investigation Arab Mahar, held talks with the vice chancellor, professors and staff for around two and a half hours.

Known by his pen name Yasir Rizvi, Dr Rehman was assistant professor at Mass Communication Department of Karachi University. He was gunned down in Federal B. Area on Wednesday.SSP Mahar told Dawn that the purpose of their visit was to ascertain if the slain teacher had been getting threat from any quarters, had an issue with some organisation or his murder was linked to ‘some internal’ problem.

The officer said the killing of Dr Waheed could be part of the renewed wave of targeted killings, aimed at destablising peace in the city.

Another member of the probe team, Azizabad DSP Aijazuddin, told Dawn that they received information about disturbances at the campus for the past three days. One of them was related to the Mass Communication Department, he said.

He said investigations was under way also to find out if the teacher’s murder was aimed at damaging image of Karachi University.
