The issue of piracy

Whoever thought of coming up with a panel discussion on the important issue of music piracy to mark World Intellectual Property Day at the National Academy of Performing Arts last week should be commended. Participated by American artist Grace McLean, US Consul General Brian Heath, pop band Fuzon’s Emu, lawyer Zain Sheikh and EMI’s Zeeshan Chaudhry, the debate brought to light some vital issues.

It took a lot of people by surprise when they got to know that 95 per cent of our radio and TV channels do not pay royalties to musicians, nor do they acknowledge artists’ efforts every time they use their songs. We hope that the authorities concerned will take notice of the matter. Start giving royalties, please.
