KARACHI: Jamaat-i-Islami chief Sirajul Haq on Saturday criticised the government for not using biometric verification system in the NA-246 by-election and asked if it lacked resources to install the system even in one constituency.

Speaking to lawyers at City Courts, the JI chief said his party wanted to make Karachi so peaceful that Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain could visit it ‘without any fear’.

The JI chief said he was visiting Karachi not to conquer it but to heal its wounds after terrorism had tarnished its image.

He praised the legal fraternity for their role in the restoration of the independent judiciary and democracy, but deplored that even they could not get justice in the Tahir Plaza case. Six people, including a lawyer, were burnt to death in the 2008 Tahir Plaza inferno case that was still pending before a court, he added.
