KARACHI: An antiterrorism court remanded on Thursday a suspect in police custody in the murder case of a jail official till April 12.

The police produced, Obaid, alias K2, before the court and submitted that he was among the many suspects picked up by the Pakistan Rangers, Sindh in an early morning raid on and around the Muttahida Qaumi Movement headquarters, Nine Zero, in Azizabad on March 11.

The investigating officer submitted that initially the suspect was booked in explosive substance and illicit weapon cases and claimed that during questioning he disclosed his involvement in the present as well as some other murder cases.

The IO sought custody of the suspect for interrogation and the judge of the ATC-IX, Farman Ali Kanasro, handed him over to the police on three-day physical remand.

According to the prosecution, deputy superintendent of central prison Amanullah Khan Niazi along with his brother Habibullah Niazi and three guards was gunned down near Saddar on June 15 in 2006 while three others, including an assistant superintendent of prison sustained wounds in the attack.

Chaudhry Sajjad and Tanveer Chand were already arrested in the case while around 15 were shown absconders.

Remand extended

Another antiterrorism court extended on Thursday physical remand of two suspects in one-and-a-half decade old case pertaining to the murder of two police officers.

After the end of their physical remand, police reproduced Obaid, alias K2, and Nadir Shah in court and sought extension in their custody.

The judge of the ATC-III, Saleem Raza Baloch, granted extension in physical remand till April 13.

According to the prosecution, sub-inspectors Mohammed Rehman and Mohammed Nisar were gunned down in March 2000 in the Solider Bazaar area.

Meanwhile, the same court extended on Thursday physical remand of another suspect in two murder cases till April 20.

Abdul Qadir, who was also arrested during the March 11 raid, was booked for allegedly killing Zubair and Abdul Karim in the office of the Muslim League-Functional in July 2013 and police constable Sarwar in September 2012 within the remit of the Kalri police station.

An antiterrorism court remanded on Thursday seven suspects in prison in illicit weapons and explosive material cases.

The in-charge judge of the ATC-II, Anandram Sairani, sent Obaid K2, Nadir Shah, Shabbir, Amir Ali, Abdul Qadir, Kazim Raza and Faisal Mehmood Mota to prison on judicial remand.
