Haddin announces retirement

MELBOURNE: Wicket-keeper Brad Haddin on Monday announced his retirement from the One-day International (ODI) format of the game a day after Australia‘s victory in the World Cup final.

He has joined his captain Michael Clarke in announcing retirement and has effectively indicated that Australia will enter a transition phase in ODIs.

Both Haddin, 37, and Clarke will continue to feature in Test cricket. Haddin will continue to play deputy to Clarke in the Test format.

When asked about his send-offs to the New Zealanders in Sunday’s final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Haddin said it was because their ‘niceness’ made him ‘uncomfortable,’.

“It was that uncomfortable. All they were was that nice to us for seven days. I said, ‘I’m not playing cricket like this. If we get another crack at these guys in the final I’m letting everything [out].’ I’m not playing another one-day game, so they can suspend me for as long as they like,” Haddin said.
