My choice: Deepika Padukone stands up for women in new video

Deepika Padukone, who had been in the news recently for speaking out about her battle with depression, has once again made headlines for starring in Vogue India's new short film, My Choice.

The powerful video, which has been directed by Homi Adajania and produced by JSW and Sangitaa Jindal, is based on a piece penned by Kersi Khambatta. The short film is a part of #VogueEmpower, Vogue's social initiative on women empowerment.

"My choice: to be a size zero or a size 15. Your mind is caged let it free. My body's not, let it be. My choice: to marry, or not to marry," goes Deepika's voice over.

Shot by Tassaduq Hussain, the two minute and thirty-six second long video shows shot after shot of strong women from a wide array of careers, such as actor Nimrat Kaur, director Zoya Akhtar, film critic Anupama Chopra and lawyer turned model Scherezade Shroff batting for women equality and providing a untied front for the freedom of women to make their own choices.

So why 99 women?

Adajania shares: "I liked the idea of telling people I originally had 100 women planned but God said the last one was too busy right now."

Bollywood stars immediately rallied behind the starlet, taking to social media to express their support:

And it wasn't just the girls. The men also spoke out in support of the cause!

However, not everyone was buying that Padukone is an activist at heart. Many questioned how genuine it is and how the video only talks about the woes of elite, urban women.
