GUJRAT: The Punjab government has approved a sum of Rs200 million for water supply and drainage scheme in Dinga city, the second major town of Kharian Tehsil.

The initial fund of Rs50 million has also been released for early execution of the project.

The scheme is mainly aimed at provision of clean drinking water to around 100,000 inhabitants of this far-flung town of Gujrat district.

District Coordination Officer Liaquat Ali Chatha told Dawn that the project was designed keeping in view the requirements of the next two decades and termed it a gift of the Punjab government for the people of the remote area.

He said the project included installation of at least four new water turbines each having capacity of one cusec whereas the earlier two turbines would also be upgraded.

The cost of repair work on those roads and streets of the city that would get damaged due to digging had also been included in the original estimation of the project, he said.

PML-N MPA Mian Tariq Mehmood of Dinga said Rs45 million out of the total funding would be spent on strengthening both sides of the main drain passing through the city.

Meanwhile, the Gujrat DCO along with Assistant Commissioners of Kharian and Sara-i-Alamgir Dr Afshan Rubab and Shoaib Nisoana also visited the Dinga city on Sunday to review the site areas of the water supply scheme and directed the executing agency to start work on the project within a week.

BOOKED: As many as 43 cases have been lodged against traders for not implementing the reduced prices of the ghee across the district during the last 24 hours, says a handout.

More than 10 shopkeepers were also arrested for violating the rates fixed by the government.
