Petition seeks Cantt polls on party basis

LAHORE: A writ petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court challenging non-party local government elections being held in Cantonment areas.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Lahore Cantonment President Awais Younas filed this petition saying the Election Commission of Pakistan announced LG polls for 42 cantonments areas of the country on the direction of the Supreme Court.

He says the LG election scheduled for April 25 are being held on a non-party basis in violation of Article 17 of the Constitution and an order passed by the Lahore High Court in 2013. The petitioner states that the Constitution gives a right to every citizen to participate in political activities and affiliate with any political party.

He says the LHC had also directed the provincial government to hold the LG polls on a party basis. The petitioner asks the court to direct the ECP to hold the LG polls in cantonment areas on a party basis.
