Army chief meets PM

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff Gen Raheel Sharif called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at his office on Thursday.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, they discussed “matters relating to the return of Temporarily Displaced Persons and raising of additional FC wings for the security of western borders”.

In the wake of fast changing developments in the politics of Karachi, especially after emergence of the video message by Saulat Mirza, a section of the media linked the PM-army chief meeting to Karachi issues. As soon as the meeting ended, some TV channels started airing reports about the possible change of governor in Sindh. However, the Governor’s House termed the reports baseless.

According to an analyst, even though the meeting was supposed to discuss other issues, the media’s focus on Karachi issues to the exclusion of other developments, is justified as the army has a key role in the ongoing Karachi operation and because it has apparently developed differences with the MQM leadership.

A member of the federal cabinet said that since the political scene in Karachi was taking a significant turn, it was likely that the prime minister and the army chief discussed the developments.
