Hamza, Awais put Navy in driving seat

KARACHI: Pakistan Navy, inspired by centuries from Hamza Ghanchi and Awais Ahmed, piled on the agony for Medicam by amassing 433-5 on day one of their third-round fixture in the Patron’s Trophy (Grade-II) Cricket Tournament here on Tuesday.

Winning the toss in the Group ‘B’ match at the NBP Sports Complex, the sailors cashed in on a batting paradise as Hamza hammered 124 from 152 balls with the aid of 12 boundaries and a brace of sixes.

Awais was not far behind as he helped himself to an unbeaten 101 off only 92 deliveries (11 fours and one six) while Babar Hussain Agha struck nine boundaries in scoring a 72-ball 83.

Medicam ended the day at 21-1 in five overs.

K-Electric were strongly placed against Pakistan Customs at the UBL Sports Complex. Left-arm paceman Mir Hamza grabbed five wickets for 42 runs to dismantle the Customs batting-up for 197 after K-Electric opted to field first at the toss.

Ramiz Raja was the top-scorer with 73 while Ramiz Shahzad hit 53.

By stumps, K-Electric thrived on left-handed opener Israrullah, who blasted 93 off 77 balls (18 boundaries), to reach 144-1 in just 25 overs.

Aaqib shah contributed 106 (181 balls, 12 fours and two sixes) as Saudi Cricket International collected 295-8 in the allotted 83 overs against Sindh Police at the RLCA Gulberg Ground. The policemen responded brilliantly to get 76-0 in 21 overs.

The fickle weather in the Punjab continued to play with the fixtures there as three matches failed to see a start because of wet conditions.

Just 27 overs were possible at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot during which Karachi Port Trust (KPT), put into bat by Asim Textile, struggled to 61-3.

Awais Mir took 4-45 to help Brighto Paints dismiss Candyland for 90 at the Model Town Greens Cricket Ground in Lahore where winning the toss and bowling first was the order of the day.

Group ‘D’ leaders Dollar East encountered stiff resistance from Khayaban-e-Amin who scored 291-7 in 69 overs after asked to bat first at the LCCA Ground.
