Twin explosions kill 3 in Quetta's Marriabad

QUETTA: Twin explosions caused by gas leakage killed a woman and her two children in Quetta's Marriabad area on Monday morning, police said.

Three children from the same family were injured in the blast that rocked the entire Hazara dominated Marriabad area.

Ashiq Hussain, a police officer, told Dawn that gas leakage in Marriabad's Nasirabad and Nadirabad areas caused huge blasts, which led to the death of a woman and her two children in Nadirabad.

However, residents of the area challenged the police's claim and said that the blasts were not caused by gas leakage, rather they were a result of rocket attacks.

Mirza Hussain, an elected councillor, told Dawn that two blasts at the same time could not be the result of gas leakage and alleged that they were terror attacks.

"We doubt that two blasts at the same time could be due to gas leakage," Hussain stated.

The injured persons were shifted to Benazir Shaheed Hospital for medical treatment.

Police and other law enforcement personnel rushed towards the site to probe into the incident.

The blasts destroyed the two houses and smashed the glasses of nearby buildings.

A bomb disposal squad was also called in the area to ascertain the cause of blasts. After eight hours, it was confirmed that the blasts occurred due to gas leakage, police said.
