Food minister accuses Sindh govt of ignoring cane growers’ rights

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for National Food Security, Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, has accused the Sindh government of not protecting rights of farmers in the province.

He was chairing a meeting with delegations of sugarcane growers from across the country on Tuesday.

However, the representative body of sugarcane growers from Balochistan, Agri Forum, Kisan Board, Sindh Aabadkaar Tanzeem and Chamber of Agriculture Sindh did not attend the meeting.

Mr Bosan urged the Sindh government to revise its decisions affecting the growers. He said the government of Sindh was giving priority only to a few stakeholders instead of sugarcane growers.

The minister said that the prices of sugarcane were different in upper and lower Sindh which was against the Constitution as well rights of growers.

A statement issued by the ministry said a delegation of sugarcane growers requested the federal government to intervene in the matter.
