NAB to look into wealth of ex-minister, wife

ISLAMABAD: The Natio­nal Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided to investigate a former federal minister and his wife for accumulating wealth ‘beyond known sources of income’.

The decision to initiate probe against Dr Arbab Alamgir, who was communication minister in the previous PPP government, and Asma Arbab was taken at a meeting of the bureau’s executive board held on Wednesday with NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry in the chair.

Without divulging details of allegations against the couple, the NAB spokesman said: “The board has approved verification of a complaint against Arbab Alamgir and his wife regarding accumulation of wealth beyond known sources of income.

The couple could not be contacted for comments despite several attempts.

The NAB board re-authorised three inquiries, one of them against Asif Hashmi, former chairman of the Evacuee Trust Property Board, management of the board and others.

They are accused of making illegal appointments, misusing authority by illegally leasing/renting the board’s property and

entering into a deal on exchange of land with the Defence Housing Authority, Lahore.

The second inquiry will be conducted against Mian Masood Akhtar, former superintending engineer of the Pakistan Public Works Department; former executive engineers Chaudhry Hassan Akhtar and Rana Saleem Akhtar; former assistant executive engineer Pervez Iqbal Mehmood and others.

They are accused of embezzling Rs105 million during the execution of construction work in Faisalabad.
