‘CPLC controversy’

APROPOS to your editorial ‘CPLC controversy’ (Jan 29), there is no doubt that the news about the raid on CPLC chief Mr Ahmed Chinoy has shocked the people of Karachi.

The CPLC has been doing a wonderful job since its inception, but this single incident has created ripples and caused aspersions that needs thorough probe.

The sequence of events followed by the press conference by Mr Chinoy are not very convincing and the story built up about the raid by the Rangers later termed as a ‘visit’ has raised doubts and innumerable questions.

It would have been most appropriate if a joint press conference by the Rangers and CPLC was held. Since this did not happen it makes the whole matter fishy.

This is the ultimate result of running parallel organisations with the same kind of job. This is a dilemma of our about 33 different agencies operating in the country overlapping each other but without much of coordination, allowing free hand to grill any one.

As the name suggests, it is the Citizens Police Liaison Committee but has same powers enjoyed by premier intelligence agencies. The CPLC has been damaged beyond repair and would take time to rehabilitate its image.

This ugly episode serves as a turning point and efforts should be made to restore its image as suggested in the editorial.
