PMA protests new registration policy

LAHORE: The Pakistan Medical Association has said the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) is humiliating doctors in the name of renewal of registration certificates.

Speaking to the media on Friday, PMA office-bearers including Prof Dr Ashraf Nizami, Dr Izhar Ahmad Chaudhry and Dr Talha Sherwani demanded restoration of the old system of renewal of the registration certificates of the doctors.

They said several applications were lying pending with the PMDC for the renewal of registration certificates for the last two years or so but no action was being taken by the Council.

The PMA office-bearers said the Council was demanding from the doctors attested copies of their degrees from the institutions concerned which, according to them, was an irrelevant requirement. They said the attested copies of the degrees had already been provided by the doctors when they were accorded registration by the PMDC.

The Council’s body should be dissolved for not addressing the legitimate demands of the doctors, the PMA demanded.

A PMDC official denied allegation of the PMA and said the Council adopted new policy for the renewal of the registration certificates when some fake doctors were awarded registration in the past. He said the PMDC took this initiative in order to bring transparency in registering process of doctors.
