First polio case of year detected

LARKANA: The first polio case of 2015 in Sindh was detected on Friday in Dhani Bakhsh Mughiri village in Qambar taluka.

Sources in the health department in Qambar-Shahdadkot said that 18-month-old Sonia, daughter of Ayaz Mughiri, was infected with the poliovirus, which affected her left arm. The family lived in Ranwti union council.

The sources said that the date of the onset of case was January 4, 2015 and excreta samples of the girl were taken on January 7 and sent to the National Institute of Health for tests.

It was confirmed on Friday, in-charge of the district health officer of Qambar-Shahdadkot Dr Mehboob Shah said.

The victim was administered 10 routine doses of immunisation and the last dose to her was given on December 23 in 2014.

A team of officials, including the additional deputy commissioner of Qambar-Shahdadkot, visited the village to meet the victim’s family. Officials in the expanded programme on immunisation Sindh confirmed polio infection in the girl.
