Robbers snatch Rs12m from cattle trader

BAHAWALPUR: Three robbers snatched Rs12 million from a trader at the cattle market on Karachi Road here on Tuesday.

Police said cattle trader Liaquat Ali of Lodhran reached the livestock market to purchase animals. A bank cash van delivered money to traders, including Liaquat who put it in his hand bag.

After a short while, three unidentified armed men appeared on the scene on a motorcycle and resorted to aerial firing.

This created panic among the traders who ran helter-skelter to save their lives. The robbers snatched the cash bag from Liaquat and fled away.

District Police Officer Sarfraz Ahmed Falki rushed to the cattle market with Samasatta police.

A case has been registered against the robbers.

SECURITY: District Coordination Officer Imran Sikandar Baloch has termed the security of the Baghdadul Jadid Campus of the Islamia University (IUB) and Quaid-i-Azam Medical College inadequate and unsatisfactory.

He stated this in a meeting which reviewed the security of educational institutions and the sensitive government installations in the district.

The DCO directed the administration of both the institutions to take strict measures for security of students and teachers.

It directed the university administration to build a boundary wall around Baghdadul Jadid Campus and asked the medical college administration to make more effective security arrangements around the college.

The heads were also asked to hire the services of trained security guards from the recognised security agencies for deployment outside the institutions.

DPO Sarfraz Ahmed Falki was also present in the meeting.

WOMEN UNIVERSITY: The Punjab Higher Education Department has assigned the additional charge of the vice chancellor of the Government Sadiq College Women University, Bahawalpur, to IUB VC Dr Qaisar Mushtaq.

According to a press release, Dr Mushtaq assumed the charge of the additional post on Tuesday.

It may be recalled the Punjab government had on March 18, 2012, upgraded the college (established in 1944) to the status of university. Since then, the university has been without a regular VC.
