KARACHI: With targeted killings of doctors, policemen and other citizens continuing in Karachi, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has called upon Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to impose “martial law” to protect the life and property of people in Sindh.

Talking to a private television channel from London on Sunday night, he said the Sindh government had failed to maintain law and order in the province as the cases of targeted killings and terrorism were increasing by the day.

He said the people of Karachi had erected barriers in their neighbourhoods for protection but the same had been removed on the orders of the provincial government.

Mr Hussain said there was no one in the government who could take responsibility for the law and order situation in the province.

“The prime minister should request the president to impose martial law on the province,” he remarked.

He was of the opinion that the government had to take certain unpopular decisions to protect the people. If the government did not want to impose martial it should issue arms licences to the people so that they could protect themselves, he added.
