Sanjay Dutt set to make comeback in 'Kaante' sequel

Loosely based on Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (1992), Kaante, the brainchild of Sanjay Gupta, quickly achieved cult classic status when it was released in 2002. And now, according to Hindustan Times, Gupta has announced plans to bring back three of the cast members (Sanjay Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan and Mahesh Manjrekar) for a sequel.

"We have a fantastic script," said Gupta. "Since, in the first movie, all three had died by the end, you will have to suspend your disbelief when you watch the sequel. We are starting the film saying, ‘What if they were alive? If they hadn’t died and met 15-20 years later, what would happen?’ For Kaante fans, this film will be a treat."

The director also said that he has already spoken to Dutt about the project and they will discuss further details once the iconic actor is released from prison: "Yes, he knows about it. We are working on the script together. We have discussed it in detail. Even when he wrote to me (from jail), he said, ‘In my head, I am thinking and thrashing out what more we can do with it.’ Even before he went in, we were working on it."

"And once Sanju is out for good, and whenever he is ready to work on the script, I am there. I have discussed it at length with Mahesh too. I haven’t had the opportunity to discuss it with Amitji yet. Whenever I get that chance, I will do it. Sanju told me he has spoken to Amitji about it," said Gupta, who will start work on his movie Jazbaa next month, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Irrfan Khan.
