ASWJ man killed in ‘sectarian’ attack

KARACHI: A dealer in electronic goods, associated with the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), was killed in an armed attack in Korangi on Saturday, police and party sources said.

Area police said that gunmen on a motorbike intercepted and targeted 25-year-old Saeed Islam at Korangi No 1 near Bengali Para when he was busy in his regular work in the shop.

“The armed men fired multiple shots that left him and customer Noor Muhammad badly wounded and sped away,” said an official at the Zaman Town police station. “Later, Saeed died while being treated at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. The victim was hit by three bullets. The victim was a resident of the same area and we are not sure if the firing was aimed at killing him or it was a botched robbery attempt.”

An ASWJ spokesman, condemning the incident, said the victim was targeted for his party association. The police and security agencies had failed to protect party workers and leaders despite several assurances, he added.

“The slain Saeed was a senior party member and actively attached to our Korangi’s organisational structure,” he added.
