Tableeghi Jamaat

THIS refers to the article ‘Sound of silent revival’ (Nov 12) by Nasir Jamal. I beg to disagree with some of the contents, and the biased outlook of the writer.

First, the writer has accommodated the anti-Tableeghi viewpoint of a couple of persons but has, either intentionally or unintentionally, failed to accommodate the pro-tableeghi elements in Pakistan.

Let me clear it that by ‘tableegh’ or ‘tableeghi’ we mean the preaching, reformation movement working in centres of Raiwind in Lahore and Nizamuddin in India.

Second, the viewpoint that terrorists who are in the current tableeghi work travel abroad, and ‘allegedly’ get ‘involved in terror incidents in some European countries’ is absurd. It is very difficult in the movement for any wrong-doer to do so.

A tableeghi for a foreign tour is recommended (and what is called ‘tafaqqud’ in tableeghi jargon and registers) by the known tableeghi fellows to a local tableeghi markaz, which onwards recommends him to Raiwind for a foreign tour. It is almost impossible for a stranger to go out with other tableeghis for any wrongdoing.

Third, it is wrong to say that most of the tableeghis are either from the PML-N or the PTI. People from all political parties do spend time in ‘tableegh’. Space constraints compel me to shorten my letter and ignore some of the objectionable points of the article.
