MQM to continue membership drive despite attack

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement said on Friday that no terrorist attack could stop its struggle for rights and its membership drive would continue.

Speaking at a press conference at the MQM’s Nine Zero headquarters, senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said three members of the Sindh Assembly and 50 workers were injured in the grenade attack at a camp set up in connection with the party’s ongoing membership campaign.

He said the second phase of the drive was to start on Friday.

Muttahida is a liberal party and it is not afraid of any terrorist attack, says MQM leader

“The Muttahida Qaumi Movement is a liberal party of Pakistan and it is not afraid of any terrorist attack.”

The MQM leader said the Sindh government was responsible for the security of every MQM camp in the city or elsewhere in the province.

“We have informed the nation about the threat of Talibanisation and recently Altaf Bhai informed us about the existence of Daish [the Islamic State group],” he said and added: “It is the responsibility of the government to stop attacks of the IS and Taliban.”

He said terrorists behind the attack on the Muttahida Qaumi Movement workers were also involved in the killing of security personnel in the city.

He urged people to stand up against militants and appealed to MQM workers to remain peaceful and not to get provoked by such incidents.

Meanwhile, MQM chief Altaf Hussain condemned the grenade attack on the MQM camp and the party was being punished for

raising its voice against the Taliban, militancy and extremism in the country.
