From the past pages of dawn: 1964: Fifty years ago: Stability versus chaos

KARACHI: President Ayub Khan has reminded the nation in his Revolution Day message that the question it has to answer at the polls is whether it wants to go back to the days of political and economic instability and international disgrace, or it would like to march forward on the road to stability, strength and prosperity. The President expressed the confidence that the people, with whom the answer lies, would make the right decisions. Recalling that six years ago the nation turned the corner and regained its self-respect and stature, the President has stressed that though the nation has been brought back on the road to progress, a lot has yet to be done.

The President has said: “…[S]ix years are too small a period in the life of a nation. A lot remains to be done. So the task of national reconstruction continues. The nation prepares to go to the polls to express its will. The question it has to answer is a simple one. Do we go back to the days of political and economic instability, of internal strife and intrigue, of international disgrace and ridicule, of our own loss of faith and morale? Or do we march forward on the road to stability, strength and prosperity?” — Special Representative
