Man killed in mortar attack on Bajaur village

KHAR: A man was killed and two others were injured when mortar shells fired by suspected Taliban militants from across the border in Afghanistan’s Kunar province hit a border village in Nawagi tehisl of Bajaur on Tuesday.

Officials of the political administration confirmed the incident and said that two mortar shells fired by the militants from across the border landed in remote area of Babara Charmang, 43 kilometres north west of Khar.

The officials said the shells hit a house, killing a man named Sher Ali Khan and injuring two other people whose names could not be ascertained.

Later, the injured were taken to the agency headquarters hospital in Khar. Residents of the area said that a portion of the house was damaged in the attack.

After the incident, volunteers of a village defence committee come out from their houses and started a search operation in their area.

Local people said that mortars were fired by Taliban militants living in the Kunar province of Afghanistan.

Officials of the administration refused to comment who might be responsible for the attack and said that they had launched an investigation into the incident.

Militants belonging to the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) attacked a security post in border area of Ghakhi in Mamond tehsil on Monday, injuring three security personnel.

Meanwhile, a member of the peace committee was seriously injured in a roadside bomb blast in the border area of Batmali in Salarzai tehisl on Tuesday evening, officials of the administration said.

They said that Jamal Khan, an active member of village defence committee in the area, was going to his home when the bomb exploded, injuring him critically.

After the incident, people of the area reached area of the blast and took the injured to a local hospital, where his condition was stated to be serious.
