Sindh Assembly meets today

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly is set to take up the Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Bill, 2014 at its Monday’s session to transfer the powers of the provincial government to the Election Commission of Pakistan to enable it to carry out the delimitation work for the local government elections in the province.

However, the house may witness fireworks if the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, which on Sunday night announced parting ways with the Pakistan Peoples Party, attempted to lodge a protest against PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah against Altaf Hussain and the word Mohajir.

Parliamentary affairs minister Dr Sikander Mandhro told Dawn that carrying out the amendment in the LG law was a requirement in the light of a Supreme Court ruling that the delimitation work of the LG constituencies be carried out by the ECP.

MQM parliamentary party leader Syed Sardar Ahmad said his party’s parliamentary party would meet before the session to chalk-out their strategy.
