Campaign against unauthorised number plates

ISLAMABAD: After a gap of nine months the Islamabad Traffic Police on Tuesday again launched a campaign against fancy and unauthorised registration number plates and this time they only fined the violator.

In January, the ITP launched a similar campaign and also imposed a ban on display of non-pattern and unauthorised registration number plates and their manufacturers.

When contacted the Islamabad Traffic Police SSP Malik Matloob said when a rule was constantly being violated it needed to be checked, therefore, the police have started the campaign.

“The use of unauthorised and non-pattern registration number plate has increased to a maximum and need to be restricted,” he added.

“Use of such registration number plate is a violation of rule and not a crime so the police do not intend to ban the number plate or impound vehicles,” he said.

“The users of the unauthorised nuber plate will only serve a ticket of Rs200,” he said.

Replying to a question, the SSP said similar campaigns were launched on a number of occasions but they remained unproductive.

The SSP urged the motorists to display only those number plates on their vehicles which were issued by excise an taxation officer.
