26 PTI, PAT workers released

SAHIWAL: On the orders of Islamabad High Court, the local administration released 26 workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek from Central Jail.

However, 60 workers of both parties were still in jail.

Jail sources informed Dawn 86 workers and supporters of PTI and PAT had been arrested and brought to Central Jail between Aug 13 and 15. They were arrested from Sahiwal, Okara and Pakpattan districts.

Respective district police arrested them in a crackdown to prevent them from attending the ‘Inquilab’ and ‘Azadi’ marches on Islamabad.

Jail sources said on Sunday the remaining prisoners were likely to be released later in the day.

CHAMBER: Joint candidates of the Founder Alliance won majority of the seats in Sahiwal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) annual election.

The election was conducted for each of the four seats of associate and corporate classes.

Out of the eight seats, five were won by Founder Alliance jointly led by Safdar Rasheed and Chaudhry Muhammad Hussain Zahid while the remaining seats were won by the Democratic Group led by Shaikh Azmat Saleem.

Azizul Haq Goraya, the election commission chairman, while announcing results on Saturday night said 436 votes were cast for the Associate Class and 112 for Corporate Class. Those who won the Associate Class were Basharat Nadeem (69 votes), Mohsin Raza Chohan (58), Muhammad Tariq Malik (63) and Safdar Rasheed (61). Babar Sagheer Anjum (258), Zafar Sardar Ghumman (260), Muhammad Akram (236), Muhammad Mohsin Kareem (250) won the Corporate Class.

The election on women’s seat would be conducted on Monday (today) and three women candidates were contesting the election.

Goraya said the chamber president’s election would be held on Sept 25.
