Floods in Sindh

HEAVY downpour brought devastation to Punjab and now the flood is moving towards Sindh. According to the media, 1.1m people have been affected and more are likely to be affected in Punjab.

It is a signal for Sindh, which has been facing flood since 2010. The northern part of the province was hit by floods in 2010, while rains destroyed the lower part of Sindh in 2011.

In 2012, rains also hit upper Sindh and some parts of Balochistan. In the past, the Sindh government was never seriously interested in securing people.

It is not only important to protect dykes, but people of katcha areas should also be provided safer place. The people in katcha areas are still looking for the support of the government for evacuation.

But, unfortunately, our representatives are focused on statements instead of going to their constituencies to protect their people.

Sindh’s embankments — Bhanoath, Hala Old, Bao Dero, Tori Bund and Qadir loop bund — urgently require repairs. People cannot afford yet another disaster. The government must learn from history.

I request the Sindh government to urgently repair vulnerable dykes in the province.
