Protesting journalists form human chain

QUETTA: Journalists staged a protest march and formed a human chain on Monday against authorities concerned for their failure to arrest those involved in the killing of two journalists and another media worker in the city two weeks ago.

The protesters, led by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (Afzal Butt group) president Afzal Butt and BUJ chief Irfan Saeed, marched in a queue from the press club to the red zone — the area where Governor House and Chief Minister House are located — and then to the provincial assembly and Balochistan High Court.

At the culmination of their demonstration, they made a human chain.

They carried banners and photographs of their murdered colleagues — Irshad Ahmed Mastoi, Abdul Rasool and Mohammad Younus.

Mr Butt criticised the federal and provincial governments over their failure to arrest the killers of journalists.

He said journalists were facing life threats and the governments and law-enforcement agencies had failed to protect them.

He said a large number of journalists had died in targeted killings during the past decade but hardly any of the perpetrators had been brought to justice.
