Muneeb creates three swimming records

PESHAWAR: Muneeb Shafiq of Sindh created three new national records in under-12 category of the 19th National Boys Age Group Swimming Championship on Friday.

The event is being held at the Adil Khan Swimming Pool by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Swimming Association.

Former sports minister Aqil Shah inaugurated the championship. KP Swimming Association secretary Asif Orakzai and Fata sports director Faisal Jamil Shah were present among other officials.

Muneed broke the record of Mohammad Rizwan of 2:49.36sec he had in 2012 with his new national record of 2:35.17sec in 200m freestyle.

In 100m backstroke, Muneeb broke another record of Faisal, also from Sindh, of 1:20.82 by creating new national record with his time of 1:20.42.

He created another record in 200m individual medley with his time of 2:50.63sec by breaking the old record of Mohammad Rizwan of 3.08.81sec he had made in 2012.

Besides Muneeb’s stunning performance, three more records were created with Saad Amin of Sindh clocking 2:13.86sec overcoming the record of Mazhar Naqvi in the 200m freestyle of under-16 category.

In U-14 event, Sindh’s Bilal Shibli created new national record with 2:53.50sec in 200m butterfly. Saad Amin had his new national record of 58.40sec in 100m freestyle of U-16 category.

On the opening day, 10 events comprising 200m freestyle, 200butterfly, 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 200m breaststroke, 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 100m freestyle were contested.

In the U-12 category, Sindh with three gold and as many silver medals is leading the medals table followed by KP with three bronze medals.

In the U-14 category, Sindh with three gold, two silver and one bronze medal is the leader, followed by Punjab (two bronze).

In the U-16 category, Sindh with four gold medals, three silver and one bronze medal got first position.

In the overall team position, Sindh with 10 gold, eight silver and two bronze medals was the leader, followed by KP with one silver and six bronze medals and Punjab with one silver and two bronze medals.

Teams from Sindh, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are taking part in the championship.

Under-14:

200mbutterfly: Bilal Shibli (Sindh), Amir Motiwala (Sindh), M. Rizwan (Punjab)

200m breaststroke: Hamza Anwar (Sindh), Ibrahim Lari (Sindh), Hassan Akbar (Punjab)

200m freestyle: Hamza Anwar (Sindh), Husaid (KP), Amir Motiwala (Sindh)

Under-12:

200m freestyle: Muneeb Shafiq (Sindh), Hamza Khalid (Sindh), Maaz Akhtar (KP)

100m backstroke: Muneeb Shafiq (Sindh), Hamza Khalid (Sindh), Maaz Akhtar (KP)
