SHIKARPUR, Aug 30: Leaders of the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee have said Sindh will face an acute shortage of water if the Kalabagh dam and the Thal canal are constructed.

The convener of the action committee and president of the Sindh People’s Party Parliamentarians, Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo, Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party chief Dr Qadir Magsi, Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Afzal Gujjar and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam leader Maulana Azam Jehangiri were speaking at a big gathering at the Jumani Hall Chowk here on Saturday evening.

They said President Gen Pervez Musharraf wanted to prolong his rule so he was applying undemocratic tactics.

They said he was not sincere to democracy and had damaged constitutional, democratic and moral values.

They accused the president of creating differences among the people to please some generals and feudal lords and added that the announcement to construct the Kalabagh dam and the Thal canal was a part of the plan.

They said the projects were against the interests of Sindh.

The action committee leaders vowed to continue their campaign till what they called anti-Sindh water projects were shelved.

Later, the leaders along with their supporters proceeded to Jacobabad.

The protesters raised slogans against President Musharraf.

ROAD BLOCKED: Residents of Masiti and its adjoining areas held a demonstration and blocked the National Highway for one hour, demanding that damaged tube wells should be made functional.

LOOTED: Some outlaws broke into the Tanvir Medical and General Store here on Friday and looted medicines and other items worth Rs75,000.

The Stuart Ganj police have registered a case.
