:KARACHI: The three-day Urdu Law Conference at its concluding session in Karachi yesterday urged the Government to adopt Urdu as the official language in all criminal, civil, revenue, rehabilitation and settlement courts in East Pakistan. The resolution said that in all the appellate courts, Urdu should be declared as an “optional language” till such time that arrangements were made to replace English. This and a number of other resolutions were passed at the session held under the chairmanship of Mr S.M. Sohail, MPA.

The other resolution urged the West Pakistan Government and the Chief Justice of West Pakistan to adopt suitable measures for the publication of the Urdu edition of the Pakistan Law Report (West Pakistan).

The Urdu Law Conference, in another resolution, demanded that the Provincial Assembly should enact laws both in Urdu and English in order to give authenticity to the Urdu language in the law courts in West Pakistan. It was demanded that suitable changes be made in the Sind Civil Court Rules, 1929, which are applicable to Karachi and former Sind, for adoption of Urdu in the courts. By another resolution, the conference appreciated the steps taken by the Karachi University for making Urdu the medium of instruction for higher classes.
