ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Wednesday submitted an adjournment motion in the National Assembly seeking the government's reply on what it called the illegal construction of Kishanganga Dam by India.

The motion was submitted by PPP leaders Syed Naveed Qamar, Imran Laghari, Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Shazia Marri and Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani.

The movers termed it as a serious matter and said the construction was a clear violation of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) as agreed between India and Pakistan.

"We express serious concern over it as it may reduce the required water discharges to Pakistan. As a result, it will further worsen the energy crisis in the country and cause massive damage to the agriculture sector due to water scarcity," the text of the motion said.

Pakistan has been objecting against the construction of the Kishanganga dam on River Jhelum and four other dams on the Chenab in violation of the IWT.
