Two PWD officials arrested over graft

PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau has arrested two PWD officials in Batkhela over their alleged involvement in Rs290 million embezzlement in execution of water supply schemes in NA-30, upper Swat.

A statement issued here on Wednesday said that SDO Asmatullah and sub-engineer Mohammad Nisar had allegedly committed corruption in water supply schemes in Matta and Khawazakhela tehsils, and Shalpeen and Biha union councils of upper Swat. It was

stated a complaint had been lodged with NAB against the suspected persons, after which the bureau authorised an inquiry into the matter.

The statement said that during physical check of the sites in NA-30, gross irregularities were detected in record entries, besides finding ghost, substandard and incomplete schemes for which complete payments had already been made to the contractors with the connivance of the said PWD officials.

It said that the arrested persons would be produced before the accountability court, Peshawar, for obtaining their physical remand. The statement said that more arrests were expected in the case.
