Flooding destroys crops

KHAIRPUR: Crops and agricultural land in Faiz Ganj taluka were destroyed by flooding when Faiz Ganj wah (canal) developed a breach in its dyke at RD-47 near the Saangi regulator on Tuesday.

Water in the canal was released only on Monday after a week-long closure, growers of the area said, adding that up to 35-foot-wide breach developed in the dyke causing flooding in a vast area around the regulator. They said some houses were also destroyed by gushing water.

Sukkur Commissioner Mohammad Abbas Baloch said he had directed the officials concerned to close the channel in order to facilitate the plugging work and assess the losses caused to the growers.

Local officials said work to drain out water from the affected lands would be started soon.
