Three killed in rain-related incidents

RAWALPINDI: Three people were killed in rain-related incidents in the city on Sunday, police and hospital sources said.

Mohammad Ali, 13, was killed after the roof of his dilapidated house caved in at Adiala Road during heavy rain on Sunday.

Ali, along with his parents and five siblings, was sleeping in a room when an iron girder affixed in the middle of the roof collapsed on them.

People from the neighborhood pulled the victims out and shifted them to hospital where the boy was pronounced dead. The other injured were, however, discharged from the hospital.

Mohammad Imran, a maternal uncle of the deceased, told Dawn that his brother-in-law Mohammad Ashfaq (father of the boy) had been residing in the rented house for many years. Mr Imran said Ashfaq had repeatedly asked the owner to get the house repaired but the latter did not care.

In another similar incident, Mohammad Khan, 60, a resident of Chakra village in Saddar Berooni, was killed after the roof of his mud house collapsed during the downpours.

A minor girl was swept away in a nullah in PWD housing society.

She was crossing a small bridge over the nullah when she slipped into the water. Till the filing of this report on Sunday evening, rescuers were trying to recover the body.
