From the past pages of dawn: 1944: Seventy years ago: Support for League

LAHORE: The Sajjadanashins of the Punjab, who have been generally accused of being a reactionary and parasitical force, are now acting as the spearhead of the Muslim League crusade against Unionism in the Punjab. Makhdoom Syed Sadr-ud-Din Gilani, the grand old man of the Punjab, whose influence among Muslims in the Punjab generally and the Muslims of Multan Division particularly is infinite, has agreed to preside over the Multan District Muslim League conference.

The Makhdoom, who is 60 and is the head of the famous Gilanis, has predicted the triumph of the Muslim League.

Similarly, the Sajjadanashin of the famous ‘gaddi’ of Sial Sharif has thrown the full weight of his personality on the side of the Muslim League.

An interesting anecdote is reported in this connection. It is stated that the Punjab premier sent a message to Syed Qamar-ud-Din Sajjadanashin, not to support Muslim League as its President [was] Shia. The Pir Sahib sent back the reply saying, “Quite right; but Sir Chhotu Ram [Unionist Party leader and a minister in the Punjab government] is also not an Ahl-i-Sunnat-wal-Jamat.” (Dawn, Delhi)
