Model Town incident: ATC sends Gullu Butt on 14-day judicial remand

LAHORE: A Lahore anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday sent Gullu Butt, the baton-wielding man seen damaging vehicles in Lahore during the Model Town incident, to jail on a 14-day remand.

Butt, the baton-wielding man who was caught on camera damaging vehicles outside the Minhajul Quran secretariat, and seven policemen were produced in the ATC today under separate charges.

On July 8, the court had ordered a six-day physical remand for Butt and today he was handed a 14-day judicial remand, following which Butt submitted a bail plea which will be heard later today.

Earlier, the court extended the interim bail of Superintendent Police (SP) Security Sulaiman Khan, who had allegedly ordered policemen to open fire on protesters in Model Town, and constable Abid Ali to July 26.

The extension in the interim bail was granted due to lack of evidence provided against the two.

Five policemen — Station House Officer (SHO) Sheikh Amir Saleem, Elite Force Inspector Hafiz Athar and constables Naveed, Kashif and Khurram — who had been booked under charges of firing and vandalism were also produced during today's hearing.

The court extended physical remand of the five policemen to July 26. The court had earlier sent the five on a five-day physical remand.
