Over Rs1trillion budget announced in Punjab Assembly

LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly's session for presentation of budget proposals for fiscal year 2014-2015 concluded on Friday while the total volume of the provincial budget is estimated to be at Rs1.034trillion, DawnNews reported.

The session was chaired by Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Mohammad Iqbal.

The budget was presented by Punjab Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman.

The salaries of government employees has risen by 10% whereas the budget allocated for police has increased by 16%.

Rs137.53bn has been allocated for communications and works, Rs20.72bn for production, Rs48.01bn for special programs, Rs55bn for special development programs and Rs122bn for health projects.

A sum of Rs6.816 billion has been allocated for industries in the budget.

Rs2.759 billion will be spent on salaries of the employees whereas the remaining amount of Rs4.056 billion is reserved for other expenditures.

Rs273 billion has been allocated for education, Rs60bn for building new schools in the province and Rs5bn for maintenance of law and order.

Earlier today, the provincial cabinet had approved the proposals.

A meeting of the provincial cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, in Lahore approved the proposals.

The meeting was attended by a number of ministers, advisors, chief secretary Punjab, Inspector General Punjab and other key officials.

During the meeting, the chief minister said the budget would provide relief to the public and would enable the provincial government to carry out more developmental projects.
