Volunteer killed at mosque gate

PESHAWAR: A volunteer was gunned down while performing duty on the gate of a mosque during prayers time at Syed Hassan Pir Road here on Friday.

An official of Yakatoot police said that the victim, Abid Hassan, was member of Qaumi Razakar Tanzeem, who used to keep vigilance at the movement of suspected people at the entrance of the mosque.

β€œHe was not a policeman, but terrorists might have targeted him as he wore a black uniform,” the official added.

He said that the attackers riding a motorcycle escaped after shooting the volunteer.

The official said that a case had been registered against the unknown killers and efforts launched to arrest them.

Meanwhile, unidentified persons hurled a hand grenade at the residence of a businessman at Hayatabad on Friday evening.

An official of Hayatabad police station said that unknown motorcyclists threw a hand grenade at the house of Farman Khan, a trader of tyres, located at Phase-II of the township.

He said that the blast damaged a portion of the house, but no one was reportedly injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, police claimed to have arrested eleven suspected persons, including nine Afghans, during raids in different areas of the provincial metropolis on Friday and also recovered weapons from them.

A police spokesman said the seized weapons included 23 pistols, four rifles, two Kalashnikovs and a repeater.
