Quetta goes without water

QUETTA: The Workers Union of Water and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) stopped water supply to city consumers on Tuesday evening and announced that the supply would remain suspended till the payment of their salary.

Haji Bashir Ahmed, president of the union, told reporters that the supply from 250 tubewells had been suspended because of the government’s failure to honour its commitment to clear the dues of employees within a week. The government had made the promise to the union leadership on April 16.

On April 30, the government was again informed that water supply to residents would be discontinued if the salary of 1700 employees were not cleared within a week, he said. But, nothing happened, therefore, drinking water supply had to be suspended.

Mr Bashir also claimed that regular employees had not been paid their remuneration for three months and daily wagers for eight months.
