NAB arrests police officer for illegal assets
PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday arrested deputy superintendent of police, Mardan Rajab Ali for possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
The suspect was suspended for running illegal detention centres over two years ago when he was SHO of Hayatabad police station. However, he was later restored.
According to the NAB, the alleged accumulation of the suspect’s illegal assets came to light after the people complained of illegal detentions to the high court during his term as SHO in Hayatabad area of Peshawar.
Later, the court asked the NAB, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa director general to investigate complaints.
In the inquiry, the NAB traced the suspect’s valuable properties, which he had purchased when he was the SHO of Hayatabad police station.
The NAB then ordered the freezing of the suspect’s some immoveable properties.
Later in July 2012, a local accountability court upheld the order.
The frozen properties included a 40 marlas plot in Taxila, 32 kanals and six marlas land in Chinarabad area of Taxila, one kanal plot in Taxila, and 15 marlas land in Lala Kalay area of Peshawar.
During the hearing into a petition, the high court had taken notice of the illegal detention and torturing of a fifth grader by Rajab Ali.
Mamala had moved the court against the detention of son Iqbal Hussain, the student of a private school.
While the petition was pending with the court, police freed the boy, who later told the court that he was picked up by the officials of Hayatabad police station from near a checkpost.
The boy claimed severe torture in custody led to fracture of his ribs and one leg.
