Rawalpindi to witness two major sports events in coming week

RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi is going to host two mega sports events, within the next four days; the 11th National Women’s Soft Ball Championship and Women’s Football Championship.

The three-day soft ball championship will kick start today at the Rawalpindi cricket stadium, said District Coordination Officer (DCO) Rawalpindi Sajid Zafar Dal.While the six-day, under-16 inter-club football championship will start from April 22, at Divisional Public School.

Addressing a press conference, on Thursday, at the Rawalpindi cricket stadium, Mr Dal and Senator Kalsoom Parveen, who is also the chairperson of the soft ball federation, said that six teams would participate in the soft ball championship.

The teams will be representing Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, the police department and the defending champions, Sindh.

“Earlier, this championship was slated to be held in Balochistan, but due to the deteriorating law and order situation there, we are holding it in Rawalpindi,” the DCO said.

Interestingly, Rawalpindi, which is a host city, is not participating in the soft ball competition.

Senator Kalsoom Parveen said that Pakistani youth, particularly girls, have a lot of potential and, if provided patronage and required funds, they could help promote a better image of the country, across the globe.

Talking about the football championship, the DCO said that under-16 inter-club women’s championship will kick start from April 22, in which six teams will participate, including Dia Women’s football club Karachi, Fatima Jinnah women’s club Karachi, Young Rising club Rawalpindi, Young Rising club Dera Ghazi Khan, Frontier college women’s football club Peshawar and Soccer Queen women’s club Rawalpindi.

The events are being organized jointly by the sports department of the city district government and the concerned federations along with the young rising women’s football club Rawalpindi.
