Bopanna, Aisam into last eight

MONACO: Pakistan’s tennis ace Aisam-ul-Haq and his Indian partner Rohan Bopanna stormed into the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday.

Aisam and Bopanna prevailed 6-3, 6-0 over Poland’s Lukasz Kubot and Robert Lindstedt of Sweden in a match just lasted just 54 minutes.

The Indo-Pak pair, who overcame stiff resistance from Australian Julian Knowle and Vasek Pospisil of Canada before winning 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in their first-round match on Tuesday, had an easier outing on Wednesday.

After cruising into a 3-0 lead, Aisam and Bopanna saw a fierce comeback from their seventh-seeded opponents who reduced their lead to 4-3 but they found an extra gear and won eight consecutive games en route to winning the match.

Aisam and Bopanna next face the third-seeded team of Croatian Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo of Brazil, who ousted the French duo of Jeremy Chardy and Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 13-11.
